Chapter 1: Connecting businesses to opportunities
Since its establishment in 2015, beNovelty has been committed to connecting businesses from different industries through its Open API platform, supporting them to fast-track their digital transformation..
So, what exactly is an API? According to Patrick Fan, Founder and CEO of beNovelty, the rise of digitalisation has paved the way for many businesses to shift their development toward cross-industry collaborations. However, discrepancies in culture and regulation across various sectors often result in communication blind spots. In these circumstances, an API functions as a bridge between the self-service platforms of different companies. So far, beNovelty has worked with more than 50 clients from a wide range of sectors, including finance, healthcare, education and food and beverage.
Chapter 2: Turning challenges into advantages
In 2020, service industries have been among those hardest hit by the COVID-19 outbreak. Yet the pandemic has also led to unexpected opportunities for beNovelty, as the pandemic-induced 'new normal' has propelled many traditional businesses to automate their operations using an API.
The education sector is one such example. Some educational institutions might not have seen digitalisation as a priority in the past, but had to urgently review their strategies and operations following the sudden onset of the pandemic. For example, social distancing rules have made face-to-face teaching unfeasible, leading educational institutions to roll out virtual classes to maintain teaching and learning activities. They have also seen the need to set up online payment gateways, as students or parents can no longer pay tuition and other fees in person. Staff have also faced challenges in executing administrative tasks while working remotely, without the right tools and technical support in place.
beNovelty’s API solutions have empowered these institutions to undergo digital transformation in a short period of time, without having to invest a large amount of capital. By integrating with the APIs of video conferencing software tools, education centres can easily shift to real-time online teaching. The use of APIs also allows them to incorporate a gateway for course applications and tuition fee collection on their websites, with an automatic reconciliation function that streamlines manual processes, significantly increasing overall operational efficiency. According to Patrick, beNovelty’s API usage from the education sector has tripled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chapter 3: Timely support and solutions
Prior to the pandemic, beNovelty had already noticed some pain points faced by education centres in collecting cash payments, and had begun a conversation with HSBC about connecting its payment collection solutions through an API. “In March 2020, as the pandemic further accelerated, we partnered with HSBC to enable customers to accept Faster Payment System (FPS) payments via a QR code,” Patrick recalled. “This collaboration provided our customers with timely support to set up online payment collection gateways.” While there is no doubt that the pandemic has increased companies’ awareness of digital transformation, the use of APIs is still an unfamiliar concept to many, said Patrick.
"The biggest challenge in operating an API platform is building trust with our clients." He continued, "HSBC has acted as our best partner and advisor in this aspect and has proactively advised us on how we can apply open API solutions across sectors, better explain the concept of an API to our customers, build a more professional, credible brand image, and boost confidence among our potential clients."
beNovelty recently participated in the ‘API EcoBooster’ programme as a technology partner to support businesses in developing open API solutions for banking services. The programme was jointly launched by HSBC and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, with the aim of promoting digital transformation.
Chapter 4: Continuing the success story with HSBC
“We look forward to partnering with other traditional businesses and helping them realise digital transformation at high efficiency and low cost through API technology,” said Patrick as he discussed the company’s ‘post-pandemic’ plan. “Our ultimate goal is to leverage our Open API platform and act as the bridge between different industries. We’ll continue to work closely with HSBC to enhance our services to meet the demand for digital transformation across different industries and bring greater convenience to Hong Kong citizens.”
